Getting Started

Key concepts

Plain-language definitions for the terms you'll see throughout Cadence.

Cadence uses a handful of specific terms. A few look similar but mean different things — especially Series versus Projects. This glossary clears that up.

Teaching

  • Series — A multi-week teaching arc with a theme and a key passage per week. A series is a container for the sermons you deliver. See Series.
  • Sermon — A single sermon you prepare and deliver. Each one lives on its own canvas. See Create a sermon.
  • Canvas — The workspace where you build a sermon out of blocks. See The sermon canvas.
  • Block — One element on the canvas: a point, a scripture reading, a story, an application, an image, and so on.

Your library

  • Vault — Your private library of reusable material. Only you can see your vault unless you explicitly share an item. See Vault.
  • Story — A reusable illustration, anecdote, quote, or statistic kept in your vault.
  • Teaching Concept — A reusable idea or teaching point kept in your vault.

Your vault is yours. Even an organization owner cannot read another person's stories or concepts unless that person shares an item with them.

Places and scheduling

  • Venue — A campus or broadcast location where sermons are delivered. See Venues.
  • Passage — A scripture reference in the library (church organizations only). See Passages.
  • Series Calendar — Your schedule of upcoming deliveries. See Series Calendar.
  • Campus View — A roll-up of everything (series, tasks, projects) happening at one venue. See Views.

Coordinating work

  • Project — A bucket of creative work — assets, milestones, budgets, and tasks — that supports your teaching but isn't a sermon itself (for example, an Easter production). See Projects.
  • Task — A single to-do, assignable to a person and tied to a project, sermon, or venue. See Tasks.
  • Automation — An if-this-then-that rule that reacts to events (like a status change) and takes an action (like creating a task). See Automations.

People and access

  • Organization — Your church or ministry account. Everything lives inside it.
  • Team — A sub-group within your organization, such as the worship or tech team. See Teams.
  • Member — A person in your organization. See Members.
  • Permission set — A named bundle of access levels that you assign to members. See Permissions.

Series vs. Projects — what's the difference?

This trips people up, so it's worth stating plainly:

  • A Series groups the sermons you preach. "The Sermon on the Mount, 6 weeks."
  • A Project groups the work around an event or initiative. "Easter — design, tech, and volunteer coordination."

They can relate to the same season of ministry, but they answer different questions: what am I teaching? versus what work has to get done?
